Electronic parking brake stuck on: what to check

Find vehicle-specific YouTube video choices and diagram searches, understand the difference between a stuck parking brake and Park, and request suitable recovery.

Quick answer

Do not force the car to move against an applied parking brake. Check the exact dashboard message and your vehicle’s normal release instructions. Low battery voltage can prevent operation on some vehicles; a persistent fault needs professional assessment.

Your vehicle’s parking brake

Find YouTube videos and request diagrams

Use the model year, which can differ from the registration year. Searches cannot confirm a release procedure is safe for your car.

On a motorway or exposed to traffic?

Do not attempt roadside repairs. If you cannot reach safety and leave safely, remain belted in, switch on hazards and call 999 for the police. When it is safe to leave, move away from traffic. Follow the Highway Code breakdown guidance.

Parking brake or gearbox Park?

An electronic parking brake acts on the brakes. The automatic gearbox’s Park position is a separate system. Selecting Neutral does not necessarily release the parking brake, and releasing the parking brake does not necessarily allow a gearbox stuck in Park to move.

Tell the recovery provider whether the gear display still shows P, whether a parking-brake warning is present and whether the wheels are known to be locked. Do not push the vehicle to find out.

If the gear selector is the problem, read our automatic car stuck-in-Park guide. This page’s video search is specifically for electronic parking brakes.

Start with normal controls and messages

While safely stationary, consult the manual for the normal release conditions for your exact car. Ignition state, the brake pedal and other conditions may matter; do not copy another model’s button sequence.

Record the exact warning, whether the engine starts or the EV becomes ready, and whether the problem followed a flat battery or recent work. A warning symbol alone is not a reliable diagnosis.

If normal operation fails or the warning persists, stop repeated attempts and request assistance. Do not remove an actuator, power a brake motor directly or use a brake-pad service-mode video as an emergency release method.

Could a flat battery be involved?

Some manufacturer manuals explicitly warn that low battery voltage prevents parking-brake operation. For example, Volvo’s V90 Cross Country fault guidance describes this limitation. That does not establish the cause on every car or mean a jump start will clear a mechanical fault.

If the car also will not start, read our non-starting car guide. Power support, if appropriate, must follow the exact manufacturer procedure. Do not assume that a charged EV traction battery proves its low-voltage system is working.

Use videos and diagrams as references

Enter the make, model and year above, then choose the red YouTube button. The service looks for actual video choices and checks their titles and availability. A matching title is not confirmation that the video’s procedure is correct.

Year differences, market, equipment and facelift changes can matter. Videos without a stated matching year are labelled accordingly. If no suitable result is found, use the direct YouTube search or the manufacturer’s manual rather than substituting a similar vehicle.

Open “Request a diagram or reference image” to choose controls, warning symbols or recovery diagrams. It prepares a search for your car. It does not generate a fictional technical image or claim a search result is a verified diagram.

Keep the car secured. A release can allow movement; if it is on a slope or you cannot ensure it stays stationary, leave the task to a professional.

Request recovery with locked wheels

Tell Baloch Recovery Services that the electronic parking brake will not release before a truck is selected. Explain whether keys are available, whether Neutral is selectable, the surface and slope, and any garage height or access limits.

Do not drag the car with locked wheels or tow it using a generic rope procedure. A recovery operator must assess the loading method and suitable equipment against the manufacturer’s requirements.

Include your pickup and destination and a dashboard photo only if safe. Read how recovery booking works before requesting a quote. Equipment and availability are confirmed for the actual job.

Common questions

Will selecting Neutral release the electronic parking brake?

Not necessarily. The gearbox and parking brake are separate systems; confirm both conditions with the correct manual and recovery operator.

Is there an emergency release cable on every car?

No universal release method applies. Do not pull a cable or dismantle trim based on another model’s instructions.

Are the YouTube videos verified repair instructions?

No. Search checks concern the video title, vehicle details and availability. The release procedure itself is not verified.

Can AI draw the exact release point for my car?

This guide does not invent mechanical release diagrams. Its diagram request prepares a search for existing manufacturer references that must be matched to the exact vehicle.

Need roadside assistance or recovery?

Tell Baloch Recovery Services where the vehicle is, what has happened and where it needs to go. We check suitable assistance and availability before confirming a booking.

Request a recovery quote

An enquiry does not dispatch a truck. Price, equipment and arrival time must be confirmed.
